On the hillnamed Orthi Petra at a height of 500 mand but a kilometre north of ancient Gortyn is the Zaharioudaki vineyard, in the village of Plouti. The varieties that are cultivated are red Kotsifali, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. White varieties are Vilana, Vidiano, Malvazia di Candia, Malvazia di Candia Aromatica and Sauvignon blanc. Both the vineyards and also the winery are open to visitors all year long.

The third largest Caretta caretta sea turtle nesting habitat in Crete is located in the area of Messara Bay. The Bay is located in southern Crete and extends from Kommos beach in the south to Kokkinos Pyrgos village in the north.
